Representing Aptos at CCS:
Shane Garvey, Vito Riccabona, Dominic DeLuca, Joey Mackle, Ben Meltzer & Patrick Mackle
Santa Cruz County had 13 golfers qualify for the Central Coast Section Regionals, held on a cold and windy Tuesday at Laguna Seca Golf Ranch. One remains.
Aptos High senior Shane Garvey shot 79 after posting an uninspiring 41 on the front nine to advance to the CCS Championships on Tuesday at the same site.
“I’m very excited to be moving on to the second round,” said Garvey, who will play for Concordia University in Austin, Texas, next season. “At the turn, I thought, ‘It’s a new nine. I can definitely turn it around. And that’s what I did. I just had to hit greens and two-putt.”
Some holes, he did better than that. His putter, despite the greens being punched and sanded, was a bright spot. He drained an 8-footer for par on No. 3, an 8-footer for birdie on hole No. 7, and a downhill 15-footer for par on No. 13.
All three putts, as was every other shot he took, was of equal importance given he finished on the cut line with four other individuals: Bryan Kim of Cupertino, Cameron Sy of Saratoga, Rishi Valluru of Gunn and Taiga Minami The York School.
Garvey said his tee shots and putting was pretty good. His approach game could’ve been better, he said. He’ll get the chance to do so next week.
“I just want to go out and have fun, and shoot lower than I shot today,” he said.
Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champion Aptos (428) and runner-up Harbor (500) were unable to crack the top 11 teams in Regional No. 2. Vito Riccabona (81), Dominic DeLuca (88), Joseph Mackle (89) and Patrick Mackle (91) also scored for the Mariners.
“Shane has been working really hard for four years, really hard, to make his game better,” Mariners coach Paul Zech said. “His teammates are super proud of him.”
