1982-83 Girls Basketball Team

1982-83 Girls Basketball Team – Coached by Dan Gruber, this team was the 1983 SCCAL champion, and won the first CCS championship, in any sport, in school history. This team remains the only girls basketball team in county history to reach the Nor-Cal Finals. En route to compiling a 29-3 record, the Mariners upset Campolindo High School, the number one Division II team in the state, in the Nor-Cal semi-finals, before losing to eventual state champion Anderson High School in the finals. The team earned a final number three ranking in the state. As Coach Gruber says, “When you talk about that team, the whole really was greater than the sum of its parts.” The members of the team were Karin Alstad, Sue Brown, Cara Hurley, Tara Locke-Paddon, Kathy Ludeman, Patty McNulty, Vickie Pelich, Char Rocha, Leanna Suggs, Denise Verch, Bonnie Wickwire, and 2005 Hall of Fame inductee Karen Cantoni. The team was presented into the Hall by Dan Gruber, and accepted by Karen Cantoni and Tara Locke-Paddon.
