Karen Cantoni

Hall of Fame Class of 2005

Karen Cantoni (class of 1983) – Karen was a three-sport athlete, starring in cross-country, basketball, and track. In basketball, Karen was a three-year starter, and she led the Mariners to three consecutive SCCAL championships. In 1983, the basketball team won the school’s first CCS championship in any sport, and the team finished second in the Nor Cal tournament. In 1983, Karen was All-League, All-CCS, and All-Nor Cal in basketball, the team and league MVP, and was selected as the Santa Cruz Sentinel’s Female Athlete-of-the-Year and as the Aptos High Female Athlete-of-the-Year. In track, Karen was a five-time SCCAL champion (400 meters, 800 meters, mile, and mile relay), and she won the Region IV Championship in the 800 meters and the mile. In cross-country, Karen was an All-League selection in both her junior and senior years. After Aptos, Karen moved-on to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where she played four years of Division I basketball for the Mustangs. She was a team captain at SMU for two years, and was named to the Southwest Conference All-Academic Team. Karen now lives in Fresno with her husband Bill Hahesy and their two daughters, Kristen and Regan. She coaches girls volleyball, basketball, and softball. Karen was presented into the Hall by her former head coach, Dan Gruber.
