Ernie Cooper

Hall of Fame Class of 2003

Ernie Cooper (class of 1980) – Ernie was a three-sport standout at Aptos. He was an All-League and All-County athlete in both football and baseball, and he was the starting point-guard on the basketball team. Ernie was the 1979 Golden Helmet Award Winner, the 1979 “National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame” scholarship winner, and the Aptos High School Male Athlete-of-the-Year in 1980. Ernie was also selected to the Aptos High 25th Anniversary All-Time Football Team. Ernie matriculated to Santa Clara University, where he played catcher on the Bronco baseball team. Ernie’s impressive leadership skills have carried over into his teaching and coaching careers. Ernie has coached football, baseball, and basketball for twenty-three years, including seven years as Aptos football’s Defensive Coordinator, and two years as Aptos baseball’s head coach. Ernie is currently the head football coach at Granite Bay High School. With the Grizzlies, he has won several league championships, two section championships, and in 2000 he was selected as the California Coach-of-the-Year. Ernie is married to Carol, and he was presented into the Hall by his former coach, Mark Dorfman.
