Briana Hinga

Hall of Fame Class of 2011

Briana Hinga (class of 2002) - Briana was a member of the varsity basketball team and varsity track & field team. In basketball, she was a four-year starter and a 1st team All-League selection all four years. She was the SCCAL “Frosh-of-the-Year in 1999, she was the SCCAL MVP during her junior and senior years, and she was 1st team All-CCS her senior year. As a junior, she led the Mariners to the 2001 SCCAL Championship and to the CCS finals, where they lost to Archbishop Mitty (Briana had 15 points in that game to lead all scorers). The team qualified for CCS all four years that Briana played. In track & field, Briana was the SCCAL champion in the high jump, a two-time CCS medalist (5th in 2000, 2nd in 2002), a state-meet qualifier, and set the school record in 2002 (5’ 5”). Briana also ran the 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m relay, and the 4x400m relay, and she was the team MVP in 2002. She helped the Mariners to win four consecutive SCCAL team championships. She was also selected as the AHS Female Athlete-of-the-Year in 2002. After high school, Briana competed in both basketball and track & field at U.C. San Diego. She currently holds the UCSD school records for the most blocks in a single season and in a single game. Briana also set the UCSD school records in both the heptathalon and the javelin. She earned All-American and Academic All-American honors in track & field during her senior year. Also, during her senior year at UCSD, she was selected as the “Woman of the Year” for the CCAA Conference, and she was also named the “Female Athlete-of-the-Year” at UCSD. After college, Briana picked up beach volleyball and now plays professionally. She was selected to be part of the U26 All-American Beach Volleyball Team during the 2009/2010 beach season and has since qualified to play in the now bankrupt AVP. She currently looks forward to playing in the NVL and other beach tournaments this season. She is also a third year Ph.D. student in Education at UC Irvine, with a specialization in Learning, Cognition, and Development. Briana was presented into the Hall by her father, Tom.
