Tim Gruber

Hall of Fame Class of 2011

Tim Gruber (class of 1978) - Tim was a three-sport athlete at Aptos, lettering in cross-country, basketball, and track & field. He earned All-CCS honors in cross-country and track & field his senior year, and was the starting point guard on the 1978 SCCAL championship basketball team. Tim won individual SCCAL and Region IV titles in cross-country during his senior season, and SCCAL titles in track & field in the 1600m and 3200m. Tim earned Santa Cruz County Prep-of-the-Week honors three times during his senior campaign, and he was selected to the All-Northern California Cross Country Team in 1978. During his senior cross-country season, Tim broke five different course records. Tim went on to San Jose State, where he made the PCAA All-Conference team in both cross-country and track & field during his freshman seasons. After another All-Conference cross country effort during his sophomore season, Tim transferred to Cabrillo College for one year of track & field. At Cabrillo, he earned All-State and All-American honors in the steeplechase, and won two Coast Conference titles (5000m & 3000m steeplechase). During his single season at Cabrillo, he broke the school records for both the 5000m and the 3000m steeplechase, records that still stand today. From Cabrillo, Tim went to Humboldt State, where he won two NCAC conference titles in the 3000m steeplechase and one in cross-country. During his two years at Humboldt, he earned NCAA All-America honors three times, and in 1982-83 he was selected as the NCAC Male Athlete-of-the-Year. Tim married AHS Alumni and SCCAL softball MVP Teresa Fujishin in 1983. They recently moved back to the Santa Cruz area with their son Brandon, who will attend Aptos as a freshman this fall. Tim earned his Bachelor of Arts in Journalism/Public Relations from Humboldt State University in 1983, and his Master of Arts in Physical Education from Saint Mary’s College in Moraga in 1991. Tim works as Group Human Resources Manager for Granite Construction Company in Watsonville. Tim enjoys writing and coaching youth sports in his spare time, he and recently published his first book titled Voices from the Water. Tim was presented into the Hall by his brother-in-law, Randy Fujishin.
