Mark Ramos

Hall of Fame Class of 2009

Mark Ramos (class of 1980) – Mark was a dominant tennis player at Aptos High School. He was the SCCAL Individual Champion both his sophomore and his senior year. During his senior year, he never lost one SCCAL game or set. In 1980, Mark lost in the CCS Semi-finals. No AHS or SCCAL individual tennis player before or since has gone so far in CCS. During high school, Mark also competed at the state and national level. He became the #5 ranked junior in Northern California, and he was also a member of the Junior National Team. Mark earned a tennis scholarship to U.C. Irvine, a Division 1 program, where he received a degree in Economics. At Irvine, Mark helped them to a #9 national ranking and three Big West Conference championships. In both 1983 and 1984, he helped the Anteaters to wins over the number-one ranked teams in the country. Mark earned a #6 national ranking in the U.S. Amateurs, and he had victories over several nationally-ranked tennis players, including some who eventually were ranked in the top 50 in the world as professionals. Mark was the head tennis pro at several clubs before achieving his dream of becoming a fireman. Today, Mark is a Division Chief for the Santa Cruz City Fire department. He is married to Wanda, and they live in Aptos. Their son, Domonick, is also an Aptos High grad, and he is a firefighter in San Jose. Mark was presented into the Hall by his brother, Paul.
